The final crunch horse racing

Is Horse Riding a Sport?

Few animals enjoy such a strong relationship with humans as the horse. Employed in agriculture, transport, and recreation, the noble horse has served man for centuries. A significant factor in this partnership is the almost unique suitability of a horse to be ridden. With honourable mentions to camels, donkeys, and cattle in some parts of the world, it is the horse that boasts the ideal combination of size, speed, conformation and temperament to carry man upon its back.

From farms to open ranges, and on to the battlefield, the sight of humans aboard horses runs through the history books. Fast forward to the 21st century, and horses are no longer used in transport or war as much as they were in years gone by. Nevertheless, horse riding remains as popular as ever, albeit the majority of equestrian pursuits now falls into the realm of leisure rather than necessity. But what type of leisure is horse riding: a sport or merely an activity?

Horse Riding: Activity or Sport?

There are those who believe that horse riding can’t be considered a sport as it involves little more than sitting on a horse’s back. However, anyone who holds that view has almost certainly never attempted to ride a horse.

Maintaining balance and exercising control over an animal that typically weighs 1,000-1,200lb involves far more than just sitting there and enjoying the ride. To ride a horse successfully requires core strength, skill, training, and practice. However, that still doesn’t automatically make horse riding a sport.

Before determining whether horse riding is an activity or a sport, it is useful to define both terms:

  • Activity – An action undertaken for enjoyment, fitness, or leisure
  • Sport – A pursuit defined by rules, elements of skill, and competition with others

With those definitions in mind, horse riding in its purest form, e.g. hacking around the fields alone, is more of an activity than a sport. However, as soon as rules, skill and competition are introduced, an activity can become a sport. For example, going out for a run for the purpose of fitness or weight loss is an activity, whereas running in a race against others is a sport.

Horse Riding as a Sport

Jockey and horse racing

Has horse riding entered the realms of rules-based competition? It certainly has, and in more ways than you might expect.

Horse Racing

In many ways, the simplest of equestrian sports, horse racing answers the straightforward question of which horse is the quickest. Horse racing is split into two branches: racing on the flat, and racing over jumps – also known as National Hunt Racing. Both forms of the sport are heavily governed by a set of rules covering everything from the weight carried by the horse to permitted use of the whip.

Flat racing, which predominantly focuses on thoroughbreds, is popular around the world, with major events including the Epsom Derby, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Kentucky Derby, and Melbourne Cup.

National Hunt racing sees horses and jockeys tackle a series of jumping challenges. Runners generally begin by racing over smaller, flimsier obstacles known as hurdles, before progressing to the larger, more challenging fences. National Hunt racing is home to the huge Cheltenham Festival and Britain’s most famous race, the Aintree Grand National. The fact that both events are considered highlights of the British “sporting” year goes some way to answering whether horse-riding can be considered a sport.

Horse Racing at the Olympics

Further confirmation that horse-riding is a sport is provided by the presence of equestrian disciplines at the Olympic Games. Such events first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1900. In 1912, the three variations which we know today were introduced as medal events:

  • Show Jumping – A test of jumping accuracy and speed as horse and jockey aim to complete a tricky course of obstacles in the fastest time.
  • Dressage – Often referred to as “horse ballet”, dressage tests the communication between horse and rider, as the horse performs a series of trained, highly controlled movements. Whereas showjumping is a test of speed, dressage is scored by a team of expert judges.
  • Eventing – Eventing is the triathlon of Olympic horse sports. Horse and jockey compete in rounds of show jumping, dressage, and a third cross-country round. Cross country sees the horse and jockey team tackle an outdoor course featuring natural obstacles, including logs, water jumps, ditches, and banks. The goal is to complete the course in the fastest time, with time penalties in place for jumping errors.

Other Horse-Riding Sports

Whilst horse racing is the highest-profile horse riding sport, followed by the events at the Olympic games, there are many other varieties, including:

  • Polo – Originating in Central Asia over 2,000 years ago, polo has become the most aristocratic of sports, counting King Charles III and Prince William among its players. Polo sees two teams of four horses and riders aim to hit a small ball into the opposing goal using a long-handled mallet.
  • Equestrian Vaulting – This skilful event resembles horse riding only in that there is a human aboard a horse’s back. However, rather than remaining stationary in the saddle, the “vaulter” performs an array of gymnastic moves while the horse continually canters in a 15m circle, before finally dismounting with an acrobatic flip.
  • Horseball – Horseball is effectively the horseback version of basketball. Two teams of four horses and riders compete to throw a ball into a small circular net.
  • Tent Pegging – This equestrian sport boasts its origins in the cavalry charges of yesteryear. Riders gallop on horseback and use a lance or sword to collect small, mounted rings, strike targets, or pick up items from the ground known as “pegs”. The “tent pegging” title stems from the old cavalry tactic of targeting tent pegs to leave the opposition in a state of collapsing tent confusion.
  • Endurance Riding – This extreme form of horse racing sees competitors tackle distances of up to 160km in a day, often over challenging terrain.
  • Reining – This Western riding sport has parallels with dressage and asks horse and rider to perform a sequence of moves including sliding stops, spins, and rollbacks.
  • Rodeo – Another traditional western sport, rodeo features horse-riding events, including bronco riding and barrel racing.

So, is horse riding a sport? The evidence suggests that it is. While riding a horse in isolation could be described as an activity, this activity provides the foundation for not one, but rather a whole family of sports.
